The headline numbers

The American Medical Association released the CPT® 2027 code set on September 9, 2026. It contains 453 editorial changes: 299 new codes, 74 revisions and 80 deletions, and it takes effect on January 1, 2027.

Because CPT® changes every January, procedure coding on claims and in your code book will change three months after the ICD-10-CM update each year.

Maternity care is restructured

The biggest structural change replaces the long-standing global maternity package with a framework that reports antepartum care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care separately. The AMA released this section early, in August, to give practices time to adapt.

If you study for the CPC exam, note that AAPC allows current or previous-year code books, so check which edition your training materials and practice questions assume.

AI services and other areas

Ten new codes describe services that involve artificial intelligence, bringing the AI-related total to 43, and the CPT® Editorial Panel updated its AI taxonomy appendix.

Other updates cover left ventricular assist devices (three new codes with new and revised guidelines), diaphragmatic hernia repair (nine new codes), prostate biopsy, a new time-based structure for biofeedback, radiology (including a new table for head and neck MR angiography) and six new codes for unattended sleep studies performed outside sleep centers.

How we handle CPT® on this site

CPT® is a registered trademark of the American Medical Association. Our practice questions refer to CPT® codes by number only and never reproduce AMA descriptions, so keep your own current CPT® code book open while you practise, just as you would on exam day.
